The main function of ISSME is to host symposia which have been held with increasing regularity since 1995. The Society itself however was not formalised until January 2021, when a task force coalesced around the growing interest in sociology of music education, building on past symposia. The ISSME task force formalised the society’s structure during the society’s meeting in the summer of 2021. Governance guidelines followed in 2026.
